Mother to Son
by Langston Hughes

Well, son, I'll tell you:
Life for me ain't been no crystal stair.
It's had tacks in it,
And splinters,
And boards torn up,
And places with no carpet on the floor—
Bare.
But all the time
I'se been a-climbin' on,
And reachin' landin's,
And turnin' corners,
And sometimes goin' in the dark
Where there ain't been no light.
So, boy, don't you turn back.
Don't you set down on the steps.
'Cause you finds it's kinder hard.
Don't you fall now—
For I'se still goin', honey,
I'se still climbin',
And life for me ain't been no crystal stair.

I chose to express my feelings through the creation of this website.

I placed the children in the top corner because they represent today's generation- a generationn expected to carry the torch of the future. The mother in the poem urges her son to aim high, strive to reach his goals, and never look back.

The rose represents the mother's strength, integrity, love, and beauty expressed in the poem. She proves to possess all of these qualities, despite the tough time she has had. After all she has endured, she still finds the courage to move on without letting anything stop her.

The poem inspires motivation and encourages me to never give up. It makes me feel free and alive. This poem also shows me that regardless of what happens or what tries to get in my way, I have to keep going to reach those goals. I love the grit and determination and courage of the mother, tinged with just a touch of disappointment, hurt and anger, that life 'ain't been no crystal stair'. This is a powerful message sent from one generation to the next.
